Quick answer
When the check engine light comes on, your car's computer has stored a trouble code. Wenzel's Automotive in Winthrop Harbor reads the code with a scan tool, then tests the parts involved to find the actual cause before recommending a repair. A code points to a system; testing finds the part.
What is included
- Scan tool reading of stored and pending codes
- Live data review and component testing
- Misfire, sensor and fuel system diagnosis
- Emissions-related fault diagnosis
- A clear explanation of the cause and the repair options
Signs you need it
- The check engine light is on or flashing
- Rough idle, hesitation or stalling
- Lower fuel economy than usual
- A failed emissions test
- A new smell, noise or loss of power
Steady light or flashing light
A steady check engine light means a fault was stored and should be checked soon. A flashing light usually means an active misfire that can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. If it flashes, reduce speed and call us.
Why a code is not a diagnosis
A code such as an oxygen sensor fault can be caused by the sensor, its wiring, a vacuum leak or a fuel problem. Replacing the part named in the code without testing often wastes money. We test first.
